RAID 6 Explained

The design of RAID 6 made in a way to tolerate a pair of simultaneous Hard disk failure and this is done by the storage of distributed parities. Raid 6 is of extremely high help in systems having a very high capacity and when the rebuilding of a RAID 5 volume takes a long time or when there is significant chance of failure of another drive before the rebuild process is completed. Raid 5 and Raid 6 are pretty much the same as far as the design and the implementation is concerned.

The difference is that the RAID 6 performs two different types of parity calculations. RAID 6 is considered to be the most reliable in terms of the data reliability.

RAID 6 increases the data reliability by using the two parity stripes. These stripes allow for the failure of the two disks which can occur within the RAID disk drive set. Major application of RAID 6 is in SATA, IDE and the SCSI environments.

Advantages of RAID 6:

  1. RAID 6 is suited for complex applications since the serial ATA drives that are used have a lower duty cycle and are likely to fail most probably.
  2. RAID 6 is particularly designed to tolerate two HDD failures at the same time by the storage of two distributed parities.
  3. Raid 6 is highly reliable compared to the other raid levels.
  4. Raid 6 is the modified version of RAID 5. The problem that stays with RAID 5 is that when the hard disk failure occurs during a raid recovery operation, there is a system breakdown or failure and data recovery is not possible.
  5. It is the most suited raid level for small as well as moderate size database systems. Raid 6 is an essential extension of the raid 5.
  6. Raid 6 provides protection against multiple bad block failures while non-degraded.
  7. For mission critical applications, it stands as a perfect solution.

Disadvantages of RAID 6:

  1. The raid 6 controller design is very complex compared to the other level controllers.
  2. The overhead of the controller for computing parity addresses is high.
  3. RAID 6 needs N+2 drives in order to implement, the reason being the dual parity scheme.
  4. Write performance can be the same as that for RAID 5.
  5. Two drives are used for parity calculations.

Applications recommended for RAID 6:

  • Web and email servers.
  • Database servers.
  • Intranet servers.
  • Excellent fault tolerance.
  • File and application servers.
