External RAID

Raid stands for Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks. The RAID technology allows for very high levels of reliability of storage from PC disk-drive components. The devices are arranged into a raid array for redundancy. RAID is now used as computer data storage and can divide as well as copy the data among one or more than one hard disk drives.

The main purposes of using a RAID are

  1. To increase the reliability of the data.
  2. To increase the input/output performance of the system.
  3. To combine two or more than two physical hard disks into one single unit using hardware.
  4. You can retrieve your data successfully through RAID recovery if it is accidentally lost.

The three main terms involved in RAID are

  1. Mirroring which involves the writing of the data to more than one disk. The data is identical in all aspects.
  2. Striping, that involves data splitting into more than one disk.
  3. Correction of the errors, which involves the redundant parity data that is stored to detect problems and repair them if possible by some method.

External RAID Array:

Hardware RAID Array:

Hardware RAID comprises mainly of two parts, which differ in the way they interface the raid array to the system.

  1. Bus-based or controller card hardware RAID: This is the more orthodox or the conventional type of hardware RAID. This also is the most commonly used RAID hardware.
  2. Intelligent, external RAID controller: This is slightly more complex as far as the implementation is concerned, though it does offer good capabilities, and also advanced features which are more expandable than the bus-based type implementations.
